When I was much younger, my mother taught me that if I have a choice to be a part of the solution or a part of the problem I should always lean toward being a part of the solution (it was a good place to start from). Then she said that I should analyze what was going on and decide whether to place all of my energies into being part of the solution or whether I should reverse my course and devote all of my energies to being the biggest problem that there could be. I always thought that mom gave sage advise, and it probably explains some of the positions that I have taken over the years on a variety of topics and in a variety of situations.
The election is over. There is no denying that I am ecstatically happy about who was elected to be the next president of this country (there is also no denying that some people are not as happy about the way things turned out as I am). The question, however, is what do we do not.
It is time to decide if you want to be a part of the solution or you want to be a part of the problem.
What will you do with regards to Universal Health Care?
What will you do with regards to supporting our troops and bringing them home? And, what will you do with regards to supporting our troops after they have come home?
What will you do about ending torture, and all of its vestiges, as an accepted tool to be used by our military and our intelligence agencies?
What will you do to narrow the widening divide between the rich and the poor?
What will you do about an economic system that allows companies to be run into the ground as the CEO is being paid millions of dollars and huge bonuses?
What will you do with regards to re-regulating those systems that have been allowed to run rampant in recent years?
What will you do about Global Warming, the environment, protection of endangered species, and protection of indigenous peoples around the globe?
What will you do to protect the basic civil rights of every individual that lives in our country, regardless of any reason someone may give to not do so?
There are more questions, many more questions. But, all of them hang pregnantly in the air as we face the new day. And, my mother's sage wisdom hangs alongside of them. It is time to choose – be a part of the solution or be a part of the problem. Should you choose the former, I will be glad to work alongside of you to bring about the change that is needed. Should you choose the latter, I will be glad to stymie you at every turn in order to bring about the change that is needed.
It is, my friends, a new day and we are all being asked to answer the call in our own way. Choose wisely what your response will be.

A short documentary by Chris Hume, who set out on a 6000 mile journey through the “red states” to find out what was behind the bitter red/blue divide that seemed to be tearing our country apart. Hume’s unusual, upbeat journey through the heartland avoids the often cynical progressive attitude toward the red states, and instead, through interviews with dozens of ordinary citizens in tucked-away corners of Middle America, uncovers many surprises about our seemingly divided nation.
(Want an insight into why some previously red states turned blue in this election? Hume will help you with your questions.)
DVD also contains Considering Democracy: 8 Things to Ask your Representative, a lively documentary shot in 10 different countries that introduces you to man y ordinary citizens from around the globe who share their thoughts about U.S. domestic and foreign policy. An invaluable global perspective on the challenges our country faces in the Barack Obama presidency.
[Also contained on this DVD are three short subjects: A Brief History of Voting, Choose to Choose, and Long Division – The Next Big Threat to Democracy.]

This is a ‘must read’ book – a searing indictment of an unjust international economic order, not by a wild-eyed idealistic left-winger, but by a sober scion of the establishment with impeccable credentials. It left me devastated but also very hopeful. Something can be done to create a more just economic order.
If you can read only one book on how to address the enormous challenges of our time, this is it … Korten weaves together a devastating critique of the tyranny of the global economy with an arsenal of well-argued alternatives to offer an empowering agenda for change.
