Pastor's Page for November, 2004
Pastor John L. Freesemann
In 1972 (during the Presidential race between George McGovern and Richard Nixon) one of my seminary professors wrote me a note saying: When it comes to a contest between clever devils and bungling angels, be assured that the devils will take it every time!
The first thing I heard this morning was a right-wing Christian fundamentalist saying: "God has spoken!" NO! Some of the people of the United States spoke, but God did not.
- They spoke and said that war is to be preferred over peace.
- They spoke and said that living in fear is preferable to living in hope.
- They spoke and said that bigotry and hatred is the moral path.
- They spoke and said that it doesn't matter if they are lied to, lose their jobs, have no health care, and can't afford to educate their children.
I can only wonder where it will end, what the changes that we will rapidly see will be and how they will affect our lives for years to come.
- How long until we have a full blown draft?
- How long until we have 3 (or 4) more justices "just like Scalia and Thomas"?
- How long until the next preemptive strike on a nation that the "resident" proclaims to be a hazard to the safety of the United States.
- How long until the next tax break for the rich.
- How long until the next no bid contract for Halliburton?
- How long until the pristine tundra of Alaska is desecrated in a search for oil?
- How long until all of the lands sacred to Native Americans are turned into toxic waste dumps?
- How long until Social Security is privatized?
- How long until Roe v Wade is overturned
That was not God speaking this morning. It was the mob mentality of 51% of our nation seeking the lowest common denominator, groveling in the fear and bigotry that the "resident" has offered them. And, for those of us who think more deeply, who seek more highly, who want the bungling angels to win, and who long for hope, there remains November 2, 2008. It's only 1,460 days away! It is time to start working.
