Pastor's Page for June, 2005

Pastor John L. Freesemann

And so we enter that "long green season" of the church. It is interesting that attention if finally being paid to the length of the Pentecost Season. Newer liturgical books have divided up the season into a couple of "sub-seasons" - ones that have nothing to do with the church year. The first of these is the Summer season, followed by the Autumn season, and November. Changes in name, however, do little to change what is supposed to be taking place during this period of time.

We have been through what is often called the "God part of the church year" - Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent and Easter. Those seasons all tell us how God has reached out to us, how God has entered into our lives. They stress that God always comes to us first, and that God's coming is supposed to make a difference in who we are and how we live.

It is that difference making that brings us into this longest season of the church year - call it Pentecost, Summer, Autumn, November, or whatever you will. The point of what we are now going through is "what difference does it make to us that God has entered our life?"

There is so much that God calls us to do, and enables us to do when entering our world. The doing, however, is up to us. If we want changes in our world, we must bring them about. If we want things to be different, we must work to make it happen.

What is it that will catch your attention during this "long green season?" Whatever it is, let me know. When we get towards the end, I'll do a list of what has been going on at HRLC as we live out the difference that God makes in our lives.

Speaking My Mind
by
Tony Campolo

With his trademark shoot-from-the-heart style, Tony Campolo shatters the stereotype of evangelical Christians as a monolithic mass of social conservatives. In Speaking My Mind, this prolific author and university professor takes issue with the public image of evangelicals at right-wing hardliners and claims a place at the table for socially liberal viewpoints.

Experience has taught Campolo the hard lesson that by challenging the conservative agenda, he risks condemnation by brothers and sisters in Christ who disagree with him. It's a chance he's willing to take in order to peak the truth in love, insisting that God is a God of compassion, who accepts and loves us as we are - in all our diversity.

Depending on your point of view, Campolo's prophetic look at the evangelical movement will either fill you with hope or scare you to death.
