Pastor John L. Freesemann

On January 20 the resident of the White House was "ignore-gurated" for another 4 year term. I didn't watch, but I couldn't help but hear some of the incredibly complex spin that was put forth concerning the event. I don't want to offer any of that. No comments on kleptocracies, and mandated or non-mandated regimes. No spin about what the numbers really tell us within the red states and the blue states (not to mention those that are now being called purple states).

Instead, I would like to simply offer one definition, taken from the Second College Edition of the Webster's New World Dictionary:

Fascism (fash-'iz-m) [It. fascismo < fascio, political group < L. fascis: see Fasces] 1. the doctrines, methods, or movement of the Fascisti; 2, a system of government characterized by rigid one-party dictatorship, forcible suppression of opposition, private economic enterprise under centralized governmental control, belligerent nationalism, racism, and militarism, etc.: first instituted in Italy in 1922; 3. a) as political movement based on such policies; b) fascist behavior.

Don't simple definitions, instead of complex spin, give one pause? I hope so!

Recommended Movie:

Salt of the Earth

Although originally blacklisted (and made by three blacklisted Hollywood filmmakers) this movie turned out to be one of the great union stories of all time. It was one of the first films chosen to be listed in the National Film Registry - films to be preserved for all time.

Made during the height of the McCarthy era, Salt of the Earth is based on a 1950 strike by zinc miners in Silver City, New Mexico.

Quote of the Month:
You are not here merely to make a living. You are here in order to enable the world to live more amply, with greater vision, with a finer spirit of hope and achievement. You are here to enrich the world, and you impoverish yourself if you forget the errand.
...President Woodrow Wilson
