Our Third Quarter Benevolence is the ELCA’s World Hunger Appeal (July through September).
First, as is true with all ELCA programs, 100% of the money given for the appeal goes to the work of the appeal. Staffing costs are covered by separate budgets of the ELCA. The World Hunger Appeal provides materials, training and education to combat hunger: agriculture, women and children, health care, hunger at home, water. Some examples of what they do are: providing mosquito netting for safety while sleeping, giving pigs to raise for food, adult literacy training. Micro-credit loans, meals, community vegetable gardens, set up and maintenance training for irrigation water and clean water for human usage.
The World Hunger Appeal works with residents of refugee camps in the Sudan to rebuild their communities, to manage their daily markets, to build and maintain their water planning, to organize and run schools for their children (including girls!). The appeal works in coffee growing regions of the world to build up fair trade coffee farmers, which also involves better usage of resources, such as water.
It is up to you! You can do a project and dedicate the money you make to the World Hunger Appeal. You can collect your change and dollars at home and put it in the offering plate at the end of the quarter (the last Sunday in September). You can put money in the large jar that sits on the cherry bookcase each Sunday. Money contributed in this manner is at times diverted to a person in need who comes to us asking for assistance on Sunday morning (this happens a couple of times a year).
Responding to the World Hunger Appeal is one part of our stewardship of the gifts God has given to each o us. We are sharing the abundance in our lives, the blessings that we have that are overflowing!
Please be generous and share with those who are less fortunate through this gift to the World Hunger Appeal. You won’t be sorry.
